Impact Investing for the 21st Century
Clara MillerClara Miller became president of Heron in 2011 after founding and serving as President/CEO of NFF from 1984- 2010. Miller is a board member of Heron, Family Independence Initiative, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, StoneCastle Financial Corp, the Kresge Foundation’s Social Investment Committee, and the U.S. Advisory Board to the G8 Social Impact Task Force. She and Heron were named Investor of the Year by Institutional Investor Magazine (2015), and received the Prince’s Prize for Innovative Philanthropy (2014). Miller received the Shining Star Award from P.S. 122 in 2014, was in NonProfit Times’ “Power and Influence Top 50” (2006-2010) and received a Rockefeller Bellagio Residency in 2010.
President Clinton appointed Miller to the U.S. Treasury’s first Community Development Advisory Board (CDFI Fund), and she became Chair in 2006. She chaired Opportunity Finance Network and was on the inaugural Nonprofit Advisory Committee of FASB. |
Nan Stone Nan Stone received her PhD in American Studies at Harvard University, and spent almost two decades at the Harvard Business Review, where she ultimately served as editor-in- chief. In 2000, she joined The Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit startup incubated at Bain & Company, as its founding knowledge partner. In that capacity, she worked with colleagues to explore the applicability – and limitations – of business concepts and practices for social-sector. Currently a senior advisor at Bridgespan, she is also an overseer of the Cambridge Community Foundation and member of the advisory board of the city’s Human Services Commission. In addition to her Harvard degree, she has an bachelor's degree from Smith College. She teaches entrepreneurship in the social sector at Tuck.

Moderator: Merritt Patridge T'13
Merritt Patridge is the executive director of the Center for Business & Society at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Prior to Tuck, she was director for strategy and operations at The Dartmouth Center for Health Care Delivery Science. From 2008 to 2011, she worked as an investment analyst for a global long/short equity hedge fund, Maverick Capital. At Maverick, Merritt joined the board of its philanthropic foundation, where she led grant-making activities, developed analytical tools for evaluating nonprofit organizations and their impact, and set strategic direction. Prior to Maverick, Merritt worked for two years as an investment analyst at Morgan Creek Capital Management, an endowment-style investment firm. She has also worked for the Clinton Health Access Initiative in Abuja, Nigeria and the National Park Service in Jackson, Wyoming. Merritt earned her MBA from Tuck, where she was a Tuck Scholar, and a BA from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill here she majored in history. She currently serves as president of the board of the Upper Valley Haven.
